A person seeking Medical Massage will usually come to a massage therapist with a physician diagnosis and often a prescription to seek massage services. That does not guarantee that Medical Massage services will be covered by an insurance company, only that the physician and massage therapist should have coordination of services.

Orthopedic and Pain Management Massage

Therapeutic touch has become increasingly recognized as it brings general emotional, psychological and physical relaxation to clients. Orthopedic and Pain Management Massage focuses on problems with a client’s musculoskeletal system. When working with musculoskeletal conditions, your therapist must have a greater set of tools and therefore requires extensive training. Anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, and pathology are important, so you should know about your therapist's education.

Sports Massage

Sports massage was designed for athletes but is useful for anyone with chronic pain, injury, or range-of-motion issues. It was originally developed to help athletes prepare their bodies for optimal performance, recover after a big event, or function well during training. Sports massage emphasizes prevention and healing of injuries to the muscles and tendons and stimulates circulation of blood and lymph fluids. Some Sports Massage techniques use trigger point therapy to break down adhesions (knots in the muscles) and increase range of motion.
